I actually saw this building from I-280 regularly, and thought it would be interesting to photograph. While visiting Islais Creek Studios (see my previous article), I did finally have a chance to do see it up close…while it was being demolished. Turns out it is an old cannery and has been a graffiti mecca since it was condemned after the 1989 earthquake; you can read more about it here.
i’m guessing it had structural damage from the earthquake–but it does seem like a shame, since old buildings like that can be beautiful rehab projects.
That looks very similar to a building downtown here.
The power corp.(NSP) is gutting an old structure and will incorporate
some remaining parts into a new office tower.
A very interesting photo! I have to say it makes me a little sad, though, to see old buildings demolished, especially when they have any sort of historic merit. Preservation and recycling is always preferable to more ugly new buildings, IMO.
It was at one time a huge fish (tuna) processing plant.
The property is owned by the California Department of Transportation (aka CalTrans) – it is my understanding that they are responsible for demolishing it.
It is an interesting building. Building for ‘artists’. It’s kinda sad that they’re demolishing it. Wonder what they’re going to do when the building’s gone.

Demolitions, even necessary ones, always seem sad to me. Like chances lost.

A real eye-opener. The lighting adds to the feel of the photo.

The end of a building, it is on it’s way out. Wonder what it was in its better times?
