1968 was one of the most tragic years in American history. The episode of the TV series “From the Earth to the Moon” tells the story well. As a ten year old, I didn’t know enough about the world to understand just how bad things were. I knew that the shootings of Bobby Kennedy and Dr. King were horrible, but I didn’t understand all the rest of it. I was, and still am, proud however of the three American astronauts who orbited the moon for the first time that Christmas Eve.
I wish the voters could have delivered defeat for Prop. 8.
Yesterday I met a man named Graham who was working on the corner of Gough and Oak, holding up a NO ON 8 sign. His ankle was in a cast. I took one of his stickers to wear and I said, “I hope that doesn’t hurt!” He said yes, it did hurt, but that he’d go home and ice it afterwards. I asked him how long he would be there, and he said, “Until the polls close.”
He said that even right there in the Civic Center, passersby had given him grief. There are actual people in SF who want to strip our friends and family of their rights, and it looks like, temporarily, they’ve won. But it won’t last. It’s the 21st century and they will be outnumbered soon. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
Congrats to Obama! Glad he won. The outcome was pretty much what was expected, although the votes were close.
I heard a small part of the speech that McCain gave and I think that was a very decent and respectful speech, especially mentioning about Obama’s grandmother. I don’t think many people would’ve brought it up.
Watching the President-elect’s speech last evening gave me ‘chicken skin’ (as we say here in Hawaii). I’m proud of the campaign Barack Obama ran, and I’m proud of the outcome. It’s a great day to be an American.
